WIRES - Donating Goods

During and after major bushfire events we receive large numbers of calls and messages from people wanting to donate goods. In most cases financial donations are preferred as it allows us to direct funds to the most needed resources quickly and more effectively and the largest costs are medical, food and rescue services.

WIRES does not have storage room or resources to receive, sort or hold quantities of goods centrally, however WIRES have 28 branches around NSW that need ongoing assistance with supplies and equipment and the items needed in each area vary considerably at different times.

If you have goods you'd like to donate we request that you please use the form below (rather than calling so we can keep WIRES rescue number free for rescue calls) and detail the goods you are offering to donate. We will then contact WIRES closest volunteers to discuss your donation.

Items needed

Anything you can help with from our Wish List will make a big difference to our volunteers and the numbers of animals we can assist:

Large cages
Towels (particularly white towels)
Flexariums
Possum boxes
Top opening pet carriers
Humidicribs / Incubators
Heating pads with thermostat controllers
Rolls of shade cloth at 50%, 80% and 90% (see details below)
Aviaries (preferably flat packed) –portable aviaries & fixed location aviaries
Knitted 100% wool pouches & 100% cotton liners - possum pouches and macropod pouches
100% cotton flat sheets and 100% cotton pillowcases
Wildlife food or credit with wildlife food suppliers (or donate to our Food Fund used 100% for wildlife food)

We are also extremely appreciative of items we can give away to our volunteers or auction at fundraising events e.g. movie tickets, event tickets, hotel or resort stays, spa treatments or passes to attractions.

Used Items

With some items e.g. aviaries, cages and towels we are happy to take used items as well as new. However, all used items must be of good quality and very clean for our volunteers to be able to use them for the wildlife in their care. Used towels must also have no loose threads as the animals can get caught in them.

White towels are ideal for WIRES rescuers and carers as they make it easier for carers to identify any issues or illnesses as bodily fluids such as blood are clearly visible. If any hotels, motels or laundry services have clean, white towels you would like to donate as they can no longer to be used in room service, please get in touch using the form below.

Shade Cloth

WIRES volunteers use shade cloth to line their rescue carriers, cages and aviaries, make shade structures in enclosures for fauna in care, make soft release areas and make stretchers so volunteers can safely move larger fauna. Shade cloth is used to protect feathers and beaks from damage when birds and raptors need to be transported or cared for in cages and aviaries. It provides shelter when there are not enough trees or shrubs and it’s used to line fences around pre-release enclosures to reduce injury when young fauna in care flee in fright. Shade cloth is also used to make nets suitable for catching some fauna, used to herd some fauna into corners to enable their rescue and it reduces visibility for the fauna so they are less stressed when in care.
