Did you know that WIRES...
Though Short-beaked Echidnas are the most well-distributed native mammals in Australia, inhabiting all states and territories, their unique courtship and reproduction leaves their population in a precarious position.
Females do not have their first puggle until they are around five years old, and unlike some of their marsupial cousins, who can have twins or even triplets, echidnas only produce one egg at a time.
From early spring, WIRES experiences a spike in calls reporting echidnas, as males begin their dangerous journey to find a mate.
Determined males will travel huge distances on the scent of their potential partner, often putting themselves in dangerous situations.
